Undertow Review / Contest

Undertow_GameBoxIt is rare that you get to play a game that has every component to make it a great game, and Undertow has every necessary component. It features a great single player campaign, a fun, addictive multi player, beautiful graphics, and sound that captures the underwater feel. Yet, the most amazing part is that this game is that it is an Xbox Live Arcade title that is under 48 MB in size. Trust me, the game looks and plays better then some Xbox 360 retail games!

At this point in time, Undertow is one of my favorite Xbox Live Arcade titles, and I would highly recommend this game to pretty much anyone. Chair Entertainment delivered a game that had high hopes, and from the first Beta Build that I got to play at the GamerScore Blog Tour to the final product that was released on XBLA, its obvious they put the much needed final touches and polish to make the game go from sorta fun, to amazing.

Better then many Xbox 360 retail game graphics!

However, don’t take my word for it, you need to try it for yourself! Download the demo and let me know what ya think, and I will pick 2 comments and award them with a free full copy of the game courtesy of Chair Entertainment! So, go now and do it!

already tried the demo , its a really good game from just playing that little bit , its amazing thats all packed into an arcade title

I first looked at Undertow and thought “this is not for me” then I saw this competition and thought “hey, why not have a go”. So I redownloaded the demo and I actually enjoyed it. My first impressions were that the graphics could have been slightly better but as we’ve seen recently, gameplay makes a game good, graphics is just the bonus (with the exception of Bioshock) but when the gameplay started, I loved it. The controls are quite similar to Smash TV and Robotron 2084 (another two XBOX Live Arcade titles I own) as you use the left thumbstick to navigate and the right thumbstick to fire. Every so often, you can upgrade your diver by pressing Y, selecting left, right, up or down. Upgrading was probably the only down side of the demo as while you were upgrading, an enemy would pop out of a nearby rock and start shooting you. Other than that, I’d glady spend £6.50 (approx.) on this great game. One I could be playing as long as I played Gears of War (as it too has a 10,000 kill achievement). 8/10

I tried out the trial and it seemed alright. If I had the spare points(I don’t at the moment because of Rock Band DLC) I would pick it up but I am broke. Seemed pretty fun and I would like to play the multiplayer.

  • ZafierX

I actually really liked the demo. I was actually looking up “Undertow Review” in my favorite search engine when this website came up. I totally agree with your review. I was actually surprised when I first played this XBLA game because I hadn’t heard anything about it before. It really does capture the whole under water feel and it has all the components of a great game. I also laughed at your comment about how this game is better than many retail games out on the 360. I couldn’t agree more. Its really nice having great games that cost 1/5 of the price of a full retail game.

I tried the trial and thought it was OK. Sounds like it may get alot funner in the later levels though and while playing multiplayer. The one thing did amaze me though is how they managed to cram this into a tiny 48mb file.! The game has friggin voice acting and cutscenes!! How the??!

  • LeaveMeAlone9375

i looked at undertow thinking that it was nothing special. but then i played it and liked the gameplay to it. the thing is i dont have any microsoft points left over, so winning this giveaway would be awesome.

Im glad this turned out to be a good game, it didnt look very appealing at first, but i guess you cant judge a book by its cover.

  • Devin “DaKing240″ Kofsky

@RoastedVeggies, you raise an interesting point. When it all comes down to it, the review is my personal opinion, although we all try to post with an unbiased, professional opinion, a game I love can be a game that you dislike. Hence, I urge people to always demo a game first if given the option.

    Nice Review King!

i’m with Roasted also. i tried the demo the other day, kinda liked it and plan on getting it on the first. but hey if i can win it here…

Thanks DaKing, Esko, & Chair Entertainment for the giveaways…

  • Mylkal

Whoa….it’s purdy and pretty fun actually for an arcade game!

  • razzleson

Whoa, I obviously missed something. I didn’t even know Undertow was released, must’ve been while I was away.

Just played the demo and thought it was pretty awesome though. I mean, just like you said, the graphics are better than most retail games.

I tried this demo, and really enjoyed it. If I win a copy, I look forward to playing it (once my Xbox 360 gets back from the repair facility).

I just played the demo for a while and thought it was mediocre. Not as good as you described it, but It was fun. The audio in this game is HORRIBLE. The voice acting is cheezy and the in-game sounds are annoying, especially when you are taking over a control point. The gameplay is smooth, but very repetetive. The difficulty is too easy. I played all 3 demo levels on the hardest difficulty and didn’t die once. But overall, it is basically just like Smash TV or Assult Heros. Overall, I give it a 6/10. But just because I gave it a six, doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t want to own the game. i am just giving my honest review and it would be a cool game to own.

  • Devin “DaKing240″ Kofsky

@die coward, I will agree that I was laughing at the voice acting and the cut scenes. Luckily for the game review, I didn’t take that into consideration since I was focusing more about the gameplay as opposed to the storyline.

demo was pretty fun, cant wait to play the full game.

  • Tapio

Pretty amazing game for an arcade title.
Too bad i wont be buying this, because there are so many games out.
Story mode looked bit empty, but i think the most fun will be in multiplayer

  • sedington86

I’ll agree with ya on the thumbs up for sure, looks pretty fun from the demo, but like others, I’d prefer to win it after such things as rock band dlc taking up my points…

  • Ydhial

    The demo wa suprisely amazing!

  • dynamik123

    the demo was great!

  • GamerchixJen

I missed this game when it was released, but I’m happy to have played it. I played the demo for about 40 minutes and had a real hard time understanding the l;evel up feature. After reading the options available I still had a hard time enjoying the level-up feature. I thought the graphics and visuals is stunning considering it is only 48 MB in size. Playing single player is kind of fun but very repetetive. Overall, I give it a 7/10 and this is without playing online multiplayer. Its too bad arcade demos do not let you play multiplayer, what if we can play for about 2 hours of free multiplayer in arcade game so we can try that aspect out? Many arcade games I bought after trying demos I have regretted because nobody is ever online. or example I bought Cloning Clyde which is a blast offline but I’m dissapointed nobody is ever online in that game.

Thanks DaKing and GamingTruth.com for the giveaway and the two chances to win.

  • Rezdon

Ooo I’m so glad I stumbled apon this post. Free give aways are always nice. Hope I get picked!

  • GamerchixJen

yes good luck with the GTR community awards Devin – I voted for you :)

  • John S

Gameplay, the aim was a bit hard to deal with with the small npc’s to shoot at as well as the lasers were to thin to shoot at the targets. Overall i like it and would probably like the multiplayer part of it.
