After this whole gamespot thing, I would be willing to assume people are already irritated enough at Kane & Lynch company Eidos. Well prepare to have it become that much worse as apparently, they are “faking” review scores. On the Kane & Lynch official site, they are displaying review scores paired with a quote from said review, or at least they look suspiciously like them. 5 star reviews from people like Gamespy and Game Informer, who really gave Kane & Lynch a 3 star review, and a 7 out of 10. They are never specifically stated as review scores, but what else are people supposed to think with 5 stars, a quote, and a name of a reputable group paired together?
The quotes they use are from an early previews of the game and no part of the real review. They apparently are quotes paired with 5 stars by Kotaku, and OXM as well, but I was not able to find them. Maybe it’s just a “dividing line”, or a “decoration”, but whatever it is, it looks a lot like false advertising. Using the quotes is fine, but having the 5 star line accompany it was not a good choice. Supposedly these have been up since before the game came out, but still, why the 5 stars? I’m sure they aren’t the first to use this ploy, but now, that the attention is already on them, this looks really bad for Eidos. How far is this all going to have to go before the dust settles? Hopefully some good comes out of all this in the form of reviewers not looking over their shoulders, companies having no say in what the reviewers and websites say, and being held accountable.
Update 1:It seems after the overflow of flak yesterday from this, Eidos removed the 5 star rating part from the quotes, so the site now no longer has fake reviews. Just a few scratches and bruises are left.
