Toshiba and HD DVD bow to the dominance of Blu-Ray

By | February 19, 2008 | Xbox 360 |

According to the Wall Street Journal, Toshiba has said that is leaving the high-definition DVD business. They stated that they will immediately cease production on all of it’s HD DVD players and recorders, and will be out of the whole business by the end of March 2008. With recent publishers like Warner Bros. and stores like Walmart dropping support of HD DVD and going Blu-Ray exclusive, the downfall of HD DVD was imminent. So we’re entering a new era, where Blu-Ray will the the standard HD disc to be used. Will we soon see a Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox 360?

HA! As if! It will just be treated like a failed technology! It’s not their fault you bought into it. However, look on the bright side now. UBER-CHEAP HD DVDs!

Wow i guess that people really like the fact that blu ray is regionally coded oh well

I still don’t understand why anybody would choose Bluray in the first place.

HD DVD offered better features on every single player, they were far cheaper, less DRM, Combo format, region free… etc.

The only advantage that Bluray had was capacity – but when you consider the fact that it’s cheaper to make 2 HD DVDs than it is to make a single Bluray, this should be a non issue.

For all intents and purposes, Sony should have failed again. Bluray should have joined Betamax, Minidisc, and UMD.

Hopefully nearby stores will clearance all their HD DVDs and I can build up my collection before they are hard to find. I also hope Cloverfield still makes an HD DVD release…

I saw this coming from a long ways away. Blu-ray looks way better and is overall a much better format IMO. But regular DVD is still way bettrer than both.
