Enjoy this video of Street Fighter IV from the Capcom event at GDC!
Capcom held an event at GDC showcasing Street Fighter IV, along with some other games. Although at first we didn’t think we would be attending due to a tight schedule, we used some ancient ninja skills to work some magic.
So, what did we think? Hit the jump to see our impressions!
I still remember playing Street Fighter 2 at the arcade while younger. No, it wasn’t a real arcade, it was actually at tennis camp, but I hated tennis, and spent most of the day in the lounge taking on the Street Fighter competition. I had an amazing record of 1-12, but either way, Street Fighter is back, and looks great!
The first impression made me think that I was playing Street Fighter 2 again, only in HD and much improved graphics. The character models are 3D, but its still based in a 2D setting which makes the game look great, but nothing too complicated. Its still that game that we used to love, but its on a special camera angle that makes the game simple, while using the potential of Xbox 360.
With the hands on demo, which was actually played on an arcade unit, and not an Xbox 360, allowed us to see an almost finalized map, and got to demo some of the new characters, including Abel. The Capcom developers that were showcasing the game actually explained that Abel was their favorite character, simply because they are new to the series [yes, I agree... what a lame answer!]
Either way, I think my favorite part, besides the goofy looking dog that isn’t complete [which can be seen in our homemade embedded video above], was the background and facial expressions. As the characters do different move, the facial expressions change, as they retreat we see scared faces, and when they are attacked we see new emotions. The background is also always changing, with electric attacks lighting up signs, and other moves knocking building pieces down, and finally having a different background effect every single game that we demo’d.
Now, the game wasn’t finished, we only could see 2 maps, with only 1 of them being a good representation of the game. But, I have high hopes for the final version of the game, and we will keep you posted on any new screens and videos that we get.
