Welcome to this weeks edition of XBLA Today, which returns after a 1 week hiatus. This week we are challenging our trivia and gambling skills on Wits & Wagers, a trivia board game brought to the XBLA. It also supports the big button controller, for you Scene It people. So, does it play, and how much useless trivia do we really know?
First thing I need to say is that this is a trivia game that’s for everyone, not just the trivia buffs. How does this work you ask? On each question, you are first asked to pick an answer without going over (all the questions have numerical answers). Then, after all are chosen, the different answers are shown, and you bet on which one you think is the correct answer. You can split your betting on two answers if you aren’t sure. Betting big on the correct answer nets you a lot more than just getting the correct one too. The person at the end of 7 questions with the most wins. The different answers you bet on also have odds attached to the answers, which change how much gets paid out. Middle answers pay back 2:1, then further out 3:1, and the largest and smallest, if correct, pay out 4:1. There is also always a “lower” option to bet on, which pays back 6:1. Each game game be played through rather quickly, as it is only 7 questions long.
The look of the game can be a little silly, as it has 6 characters standing around during each question. You can pick the face from a gallery of faces, and the clothes will change with each round. You can also make the character “dance” by moving the right analog stick. It’s more of a flailing about, but it gets the job done as it’ll provide some mild entertainment for some. You can also use the vision camera to have a tv with you in it for a body/head, and have arms and legs sticking out.
There are 700 questions in the game, and 25 hours of gameplay claimed. They also say that they will be adding question packs so hopefully they keep it coming at a pace that will keep the game fresh. The game supports 1-4 player local multiplayer, 2-6 players online. Also, don’t forget to check out the achievement list to see if you can pull of the full 200.
In the end, it is a trivia game for everyone. If you don’t know the answer, you bet on the person who probably does. It’s a simple mechanic, that seems to be quite a bit of fun. I can see there being some pretty interesting conversations going on in multiplayer, and plenty of laughs at some of the answers as well. As long as they do keep up with the DLC plans, I’ll be recommending this one for sure. Thanks for stopping in, and tune in next week for more XBLA Today.
