Epic Games Acquires Chair Entertainment

By | May 20, 2008 | Xbox 360 |

Wow, even we didn’t see this coming but Epic Games has acquired Chair Entertainment, the people who created Undertow for the XBLA. We spoke with Chair Entertainment following the announcement, and they seemed very excited to work with Epic. The press release can be found below…

Epic Games, Inc., creators of the award-winning Unreal and Gears of War video game franchises and the industry leading Unreal Engine, today announced its acquisition of Utah-based development studio, Chair Entertainment Group, LLC. Under the terms of the agreement, Chair Entertainment Group has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Epic Games and will continue to operate under the same name while maintaining its focus on creating new original game properties which utilize Epic’s Unreal Engine technology.

“Chair’s stylized approach to creating games is further enhanced by their ability to stretch our technology in new directions that not only help in creating amazing gaming experiences but also demonstrate the power and versatility of the Unreal Engine,” said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, Inc. “We are thrilled to bring the Chair team into the Epic family, and look forward to working with them to create original new games that continue to innovate and inspire.”

“Our team has long admired Epic for its ability to shape the game industry with its innovative technology and first-rate video game offerings,” said Ryan Holmes, Co-Founder and CEO of Chair Entertainment Group. “We share Epic’s passion for creating ground-breaking game play experiences and are excited for the opportunity to partner with a truly visionary company.”

Founded in 2005, Chair Entertainment Group is jointly led by directors, Donald and Geremy Mustard, and CEO Ryan Holmes. Best known for its award-winning Xbox Live Arcade title, Undertow, Chair’s previous success includes the launch of its Empire property which has produced an Orson Scott Card-written New York Times bestselling novel and a feature film currently in development with Warner Bros. In 2007, after several years of building games with Unreal technology, Chair entered into an agreement with Epic Games to make Unreal Engine 3 their exclusive technology for game development.

However, the first thing we wonder is, what will happen to the upcoming Empire based games that Chair Entertainment is working on.

Hopefully it won't effect the Empire game in a negative way. If anything, it should bring more technology to the team which should, in theory, make the game even better.

Agreed, I think this could be a very good move for both companies.

I don't really care for either company but I am glad they have joined forces :)

I'm not sure whether Epic is picking them up because it want's more development houses, or whether it is a way for them to champion other methods for Unreal Engine (like XBLA)

Wow…pretty sweet. lol Maybe some day i'll actually boot up my free copy of undertow…LOL

Gears of War, and Unreal Tournament… need I say more? Oh, and Undertow…

Gears was good for a month till the first update started ruining the multiplayer and all the kids got the game for Christmas, the single player sucked. I lost interest shortly after and have no interest in GOW2.

Unreal looks like crap, I rented and tried it out on the PS3 and could nto stand it. Complete lack of single player and the multiplayer is way to fast paced and boring for my taste.

Undertow is fun….but I would not pay anything for it, I am glad I got it free because it was fun while it lasted but the god awful story(I know its a XBLA game) and the gameplay(got old after awhile) just ruined it imo.

I don't think you can call Unreal multiplayer boring, it is no more "standard" than any other fps on consoles/PCs with the exception of a few.

and most of the standard fps games are lame.

Halo 3 and Shadowrun are the only two mp fps games worth playing for more than a month at the most.
