Community Games Beta Now LIVE!

By | May 21, 2008 | Xbox 360 |

Revealed at GDC ’08, Community Games were shown as a way for Indie developers to get their games out, reviewed and analyzed before they were released. Now, XNA Community Games have moved into the Beta phase, preparing for their widespread domination this holiday. In order to review and submit games however you will have to have a premium membership, which costs $49 (USD) for 4 months, and $99 (USD) for a year. The Beta is available to everyone, however only members with a US Live ID will be able to download the to-be-reviewed games to their Xbox 360. The ability to network and submit games for others to review is still there for all members that are interested.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, go to the Creators Club Online, and sign up. You can get a free membership with your Gamertag/Windows Live ID, which does give you some benefits but not really the fun ones you can get with a premium membership. The announcement post on the MSDN Blogs also has a ton of links to valuable resources, so that is worth checking out as well. So go ahead and enjoy! And don’t forget to let us know if you’re developing a game on XNA, we’d love to feature it here!

I don't quite get why this is only available to people in the US…

Beats me too…I would love to see this available to Canada, Europe and both 'down-under' territories. I do understand why they might want to beta it in the US though…the US being where Microsoft is based, and they can control the copyrights and such there too. Oh well…I guess we'll just have to sit tight and wait. I'm tempted to try and force it to work with my Canadian live account…lol

It's a shame the US get all this content that others don't get but that's the way it goes.

$99/yr? Does this price include the software to develop?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/djdatz djdatz

Yea…but you can get the software to develop with the free membership regardless. lol

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/djdatz djdatz

It is, but that's what happens with Microsoft being so US-centred.

Does it have anything to do with export laws or something regarding the posted content? I'm not up with all the laws regarding electronic media .. just curious if it's something they don't want to deal with regulating independent developers.

I haven't read the announcement .. will this be available worldwide when it launches?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/djdatz djdatz

I'm not up on the exact laws either but I think that's where it starts. Also, if they have problems with people violating copyrights and stuff it's easier to start pursuing these violators in the US than worldwide. With the US being a smaller crowd it is also easier to moderate and see if/how people are committing violations.

It was said that more territories would be added in the span of the Beta, my first guesses would be Canada and the UK… But the program will be available worldwide when it does launch.

    Ah, that'll be pretty cool.

I'm excited to see what comes of the independent developers .. there are some pretty fun free games out on the internet.

Thats pretty cool :) I have always wanted to get into this but I haven't brought myself to do it yet.

Well when I went to GameCamp Toronto 2, it was basically all about Indie devs, and saw some pretty damn sweet games there… :D
