New 360 Dash – Install Game to Hard-Drive – Video

By | August 10, 2008 | Xbox 360 |

Included in the upcoming 360 dash overhaul is the ability to install any of your 360 games to the hard-drive, this will supposedly reduce load times, keep the disk in a better condition and eliminate the sound of the drive spinning up in the console (arguably the most annoying part of a 360).

Someone seems to have gotten their hands on the new dash early (maybe an internal source) and included in the video below is the full install process so you can see for yourself, they’ve demoed it using Grand Theft Auto IV, while there is a fade to black so we don’t know how long it takes, we do know it took up 6.8GB of space on the hard-drive after the installation.

6.8gb is not bad for gta because that game is huge so i was expecting it to be bigger

Saw this on another site, still awesome nonetheless…This isn't going to be a fall "Update" but a fall "Upgrade."

It's just copying the raw game file from the DVD, which is just a dual layer DVD (hence the 6.8gb)

Time to face the music armed with this great ionfmrtaion.

So we can just hire a game and play it whenever we want?

You still need to have the disk in the tray to play the game, the installation just means it won't actually spin the disk up, reducing noise & potentially decreasing load time

What I'm interested in and what X3F raised as an issue in one of their fancasts, is if this is such a "big deal" in decreasing load times, how come we don't have any HDD vs. disc comparisons yet? :(

That's what I said too. If this is being touted as being a major improvement, can we get some actual numbers please?

    hmm.. pretty anti-climatic :)

I'm interested in seeing some comparisons to see what the benefits really are.

They say it's a great *feature* but I don't believe they've actually said anything about load times, people have only assumed things (including myself!)

Realistically the only speed increase from this is if the game is waiting for the disk to spin to the correct location to get content, in some ways it can potentially be worse in the long run due to things like fragmentation on the 360 hard-drive.
