Welcome one and all to a very mechanical edition of XBLA Today where we take on a new Mega Man, and War World, which has had a long wait to release. One is a classic and a sure hit with at least some old school fans, and the other has Mechs, is there any way we can lose this week? Let’s find out.
In War World you control an assault mech and fight against, of course, other mechs, on the planet called War World. It is a third-person shooter with three single-player game modes. There is a 100 level arcade mode with 5 difficulties, and then straight up deathmatch and team deathmatch with bots. There is also a 4 mode online and system link multiplayer, with all the usuals. Capture the Flag, Bomb Assault, Death Match, and Team Deathmatch are the modes for up to 8 players to destroy each other in. There is 16 different mechs to chose from, with all sorts of different abilities for all types of players, such as higher shields, or shield penetrating lasers, high speed, or mortars. After playing through the demo quite a few times, the game is fun, but the demo is rediculously short. The graphics are suprisingly good for an arcade game, but of course it’s not quite retail game quality, but good none the less. For 800 points, this isn’t to bad at all, at least it seems so.
Mega Man is a classic icon in gaming. This game harkens back to the days of 2D platforming, 8-bit graphics, and of course, old school gaming soundtracks, with all the bleeps and bloops you can handle. Set after the events of Mega Man 8, multiple riots have sprung up all over the world, and the blame is being placed on Dr. Light! Of course it’s up to you to right this wrong. The graphics have all been done 8-bit style, which is an interesting look, and it looks good, but I can’t help but want more. The sound is great, and the gameplay is as tough as ever. The mechanics are simple, but this is definately for the hardcore fan. There is online leaderboards as well to test your Mega Man prowess against your friends to see who really is the master. For some, this game may be to hard, and may not be able to even get through the trial, but as I said, this game really seems to be made for the hardcore fans. There is also the situation of the DLC already set to come out for it soon, and while the game seems to be worth the full 800 points by itself, it’s still frustrating to see this sort of thing happen.
So this week turns out fairly well as we have a mech game for all the fans out there that seems to be decent, but with such short demo, we can’t be sure, and a classic franchise as difficult as ever for the hardcore. Neither release this week is for everyone, but for the correct audiences they could both be hits.
