By Welcome to this weeks Avatar loaded edition of XBLA Today as we take a look at Kingdom for Keflings, the first game out made with the new NXE Avatars in mind.
In Kingdom for Keflings you are a giant. You can choose from a small amount of other premade giants to play as, or as your avatar who is also a giant. Your goal is to help these smaller creatures build their city. That’s it. You help them collect resources, and teach them to do it by picking them up in one hand and taking them over to the trees for instance, then taking them to the shop showing them where to bring the resources. You then use the resources to create pieces of buildings that you also pick up and assemble yourself. The game doesn’t seem that hard at all, but it is fun anyways. Possibly because there is something oddly satistfying in seeing yourself as a giant, carrying around people, or even kicking them and watching them go flying. There is also online co-op for you and some friends to boss around a bunch of smaller people together. This game is simple fun, and the first game to really implement the avatar. The looks are fairly decent, going in a style that isn’t gritty realistic at all, and the avatar fits in fairly well.
In the end, whether it’s the simple gameplay or being a giant, the game works, I rather enjoy it, and I can’t really explain why. Not the game of the year, but it’s fun, and that’s all that matters.
Also don’t forget the ever increasing number of XNA games now out on the service. They seem to be adding new ones each day!
