The Maw DLC Coming [Now With Screens]

By | January 26, 2009 | DLC |

Update 1: Twisted Pixel just sent us some screens of the new maps…

[autoviewer=291]

Kotaku is reporting that ‘The Maw‘ developers Twisted Pixel are already hard at work on some DLC for the arcade title.  For those that have played the game this should come as no surprise.  While being a unique and very fun game to play I found it to be somewhat on the short end of the spectrum. With the three new DLC levels, whose releases will be spaced out, we will be able to fill in some more of the story as they will be acting as “deleted scenes” that take place between the retail levels. Here’s a little more info on the levels that will be coming with their own Achievement ad will run close to 100 MS Points.

“Brute Force will fill in some missing moments found between and original game’s second and third level, the team told me. In this level, Bounty Hunters have sent in members from their new elite strike force, the Brutes, to stop Frank and Maw.

In River Redirect, which occurs after the original game’s sixth level, Frank and Maw have to change the course of a rive to reopen their path past a raging fire.

The Speeder Lane level will take place after the original game’s seventh level and has Maw and Frank stealing a Bounty Hunter Speeder and using it to break through a blockade.”

There is no official date for the DLC but like many others that have enjoyed playing ‘The Maw’ I hope the first one shows up sooner rather than later.

    Man…I don't know about this.

To have DLC ready already is just mighty suspicious. For a smaller development company, this means they were probably working on this before the game even released. Considering the fact that one of the biggest complaints about the title is it's length, it just seems odd to release DLC so soon after release and for a price no less.

I sort of wish more companies would take Criterions approach with DLC. They provided great updates to their game to keep it fresh and unique, and now a year later they are giving the fans the option to purchase a few new novelty cars.

    Now that's cool.

It isn’t suspicious. Many times a game is complete months in advance, and the game simply is going through certification and bug testing at Microsoft. While this is going on, developers are working on A. new content and/or B. new titles.

Agreed. More companies need to take Criterion's approach to things. It's not always about money. Sometimes it's purely about your fans. But I also do agree with Devin though. They could have been working on this while the title was in development. Here's to hoping the DLC doesn't cost as much as the game…

Agreed. It's very weird to have DLC so early after the games release and then they are going to try and charge people 100 MS Points for 3 levels that should have been in the game in the first place? Talk about a money scam.

I think it has to do with the original size of the game being 1 gb and the fact that they had to compress it down to 150 mb to be on xbox live that these extra levels got squeezed out in the process. Personally, The game was fun but way to short. This should have been a free download, very disappointing.
Although, in small defense, it was very cool to get a free premium theme for beating the game and free gamerpics for beating levels. I wish games would do that more often.

At this day and age, not every company can afford to just give everything away. As gamers, while we love free stuff, we can't get too greedy.

Another reason to play some more of The Maw? Sure! Don't most of us have ~100 points stuck on our accounts?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/djdatz DjDATZ

LOL, I would pay 140 for it, if it would get rid of the extra +40 MSP i have sitting there…

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/djdatz DjDATZ

I have yet to beat it, but I saw those were unlockables for the end. If you think about a premium theme being 250MSP, that's quite the value. But again, I would have to agree with Devin, that most companies don't have the budgets to give stuff away for free. Then again, we do like getting stuff for free, especially when some of us are really feeling the squeeze.

Thanks to Rock Band no I don't

I am having a hard enough time trying to find the money to buy points for the game, I doubt I will buy the DLC unless it adds several hours to the length of the game but as it stands I would rather spend my money on Rock Band songs since I play that more than I would ever play the Maw.
