‘Space Invaders Extreme’ has seen life on the DS and PSP and soon we’ll be seeing it hit the Xbox LIVE Arcade. One of the first things people will notice about ‘Space Invaders Extreme’ is the familiar look with a unique twist. While the units have all maintained that retro feel the background is very different in that it features exclusive visualizers from the (in)famous Jeff Minter. While playing I noticed, and you will too, that when you shoot there are sound effects but they sometimes seem delayed. This is not on accident as the sounds from firing weapons, along with the controller rumble, have been set to stay in sync with the music featured in the game. It’s a very subtle thing that seems to really help the flow and immersion of the game.
In addition to the standard single player mode you will also be able to experience multiplayer with up to four people, either locally or over Xbox LIVE, in co-op or versus modes. Multiplayer versus has Survivor mode, where you go head to head with your opponents and the last man standing wins, as well as Score Attack mode, where the person with the highest score at the end of the game wins. If co-op is more your cup of tea you can all work together against the all-new enemies and bosses while sharing a single pool of extra lives.
This is a very interesting arcade title and is sure to offer hours and hours of fun with your friends or even while flying solo. No exact release date or price has been determined but I encourage everybody to at least check out the demo. We’ll have more hands-on impressions in the next couple weeks leading up to the games release.
