The Choice: GH5 vs. The Beatles

By | August 5, 2009 | Xbox 360 |

Welcome to our new segment, currently entitled, The Choice. If you had a choice, and could only pick one of these titles, which would you pick? Some information for reach title, including the most recent screenshots are below…

Guitar Hero 5

While in my opinion Guitar Hero: World Tour didn’t live up to Rock Band 2, the newest iteration is showing some promise with an 85 song set list, including Under Pressure, Feel Good Inc, Sex on Fire, and Do You Feel Like We Do (the live version of course). Equally impressive is that you can jump in and out at any time, without interrupting the game, and choose any instrument that you want. Lastly, you can rock out with your Avatar.

Added notes: You can play all your GH:WT DLC, and Santana is a playable character!

The Beatles: Rock Band

What happens when you take The Beatles, who have sold over 1 billion records worldwide, and you combine it with Rock Band. You get a set list, dedicated to The Beatles, and promises to be a custom Beatles experience, with unique locations, sets, and so much more that Harmonix is keeping secret. Having played Here Comes The Sun, the game plays great. The biggest noticeable change over the regular Rock Band 2 is the addition of “Harmony” which allows up to 3 people to sing.

Added notes: Dreamscape backgrounds!

If you could only choose one of these titles, at least at launch, which would it be and why?

Beatles hands down, the only good reason I see to buy GH5 is the addition of avatars and even then it would get boring after a while.

Yeah, I've been wrestling with this thought for the last several months. On one hand, GH has a decent number of songs that I'm really looking forward to, but the gameplay always felt a little broken, specifically vocals. As far as Rock Band goes, I know the gameplay will be airtight, but I've never been the biggest Beatles fan. I mean, it's not that I don't like them, I'm just not big on them. I'll probably end up buying both.

After the announcement of the track list for GH5, I wish that is the one I had pre ordered. I'm more excited about the The Beatles Rock Band though. I mean, The Beatles were revolutionary in their time and there will never be a band that does more to music than they did. I love their music and to be able to play along to their songs is going to be an amazing experience. I will probably get both in the end with the awesome tracklist from GH5 and the great songs in TB:RB.

Beatles, just because I got to play it and I don't particularly like the Guitar Hero franchise.

    The Beatles.

Why? Because Harmonix is just flat out the better developer when it comes to music games, they treat their games with care and they know what they are doing when it comes to charting music and they care about the fans and they have set out on delivering a quality product. The Beatles looks amazing, you can really tell they have worked hard to recreate quite possibly the greatest band to have ever exsisted in game form, and it just looks beatiful and looks like some of the songs would be a ton of fun.

Harmonix is also making a real band based game, they are not releasing a Beatles game with only half of the set list being Beatles songs like Activison did with Aerosmith and Metallica and is doing with Van Halen.

Harmonix also plans to support The Beatles after launch which is something Activison apparently doesn't like doing since the little DLC all the Guitar Heros have got have been prettyy meh, I know that when I buy The Beatles I will be busy with it for awhile since DLC is planned for it and I love that, I would love for GH Metallica to get DLC since I want Unforgiven II so bad :[

I'd go with the The Beatles: Rock Band for this one. As excited as I am for Guitar Hero, I'm afraid of it possibly being on the same level as GH:WT. For The Beatles: Rock Band, I'm positive that it will be a quality game throughout though.

well…this is easy, The Beatles: Rock Band
why? because I am a big fan of the Beatles since I know, and because Harmonix, is much better developer, they doesnt make 4 Rock Bands in a year, like Activision is making with the "Guitar Hero franchise"(GH: Metallica, GH: Smash Hits, GH5 and GH: Van Halen, all in the same year, that sure is "milking")

Tough choice but I would have to pick The Beatles. I can get all the other music I want from the already available list of music titles. From Guitar Hero 3 – World Tour to Rock Band 1 and 2; there is plenty for me to be satisfied with. I don't get new Guitar Hero / Rock Band games for the new innovations – I get them for the new music. Since no other music game has had or ever will have The Beatles, this may be our only chance to enjoy them in a video game.

The Beatles Rock Band. I might rent GH5, but probably not. RB is just more my style.

Beatles for sure. I will get GH5 when they run it on sale for half off though!

Definitely the Beatles: Rock Band. I've played it already, and it is AMAZING! Not just a Beatles skin on the Rock Band engine. To all the people that pre-ordered already (as well as plan on picking it up once it comes out), you will NOT be disappointed!!!

I hate that both of these games are so good… You get to play the GHWT and GHGH games in GH5 on release… The Beatles is… Well, The Beatles… So conclusion? BOTH. :D Or GH5 by a slim, slim margin.

  • iamtheddrman

TB:RB without a doubt. I've rented GH:A, GH:WT, and GH:M and it's obvious that Neversoft doesn't care about gameplay, charting, or quality in any way. They simply want to shell out as many discs as possible to cash in on the Guitar Hero name (which HARMONIX built, you know). GH:M was ok, but was a victim to an incredibly narrow tracklist. There were maybe 2 songs that weren't metal? The new "features" in GH5 make me laugh. "Save a band member!" just like Rock Band did back in 2007. "Join in instantly!", but why would I want to do that? I could possibly see the desire to do so in a party setting, but never outside that. Then all the stupid extra modes that they added to please the hardcore GH fanboys… it's quite sad to me.

The Beatles: Rock Band does little to "innovate" like GH is claiming they're doing, but they're perfecting the approach to a band-specific game. The ENTIRE setlist is The Beatles. Their name is on the front, right? So why would I want to play songs by some other bands? I don't. Anyways, looking at the Dreamscape sequences (particularly "I Am The Walrus") really shows the incredible level of detail Harmonix is going to for this game. Every single piece of the sequence has some significance to the Beatles, whether it is directly from the lyrics, or clever allusions to events in the history of the band. The whammies no longer affect the sound of the instrument (THANK GOD) and drum fills have been taken out in favor of a single green crash at the end of a measure. The art style is distinctly Beatles-esque, in the menus, on the characters, and even the track backgrounds. Throw in 3-part vocal harmony and tons of DLC after release, and it's a no-brainer which game I'm going to buy.

I really hope Neversoft either learns their lesson and starts making great GH games, or just completely folds so they stop tainting the name Harmonix created.

guitar hero 5, easy decision. The mechanics of the gameplay for rockband has too many flaws. When guitar hero first came out, it was all about the guitar. Everybody wanted to play their favorite songs on guitar in a video game. When rockband came out it was about having an entire band and being able to play songs on other important instruments such as drums, and vocals. (bass was already in guitar hero) A lot of people complained that the guitar playing in rockband was not comparable to the guitar in guitar hero. This is why I liked guitar hero world tour better than rock band 2. The guitar is the key aspect of the game, even if the song list for one is better than the other. Therefore, I choose guitar hero 5 all the way as they have been consistent with the gameplay and since this is the 5th game, there is bound to be more great songs to play on guitar.

@perfect0zer0 Maybe you didn't think about this, but Harmonix is the group that created the first 2 Guitar Hero games (3 if you include 80s Encore). They sold the franchise to Activision who then made Guitar Hero 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Hero#Harmonix…

As for me, I'm a Rock Band lover through and through. I've loved the Beatles since I was little and my grandma would play me songs on her record player. I can't wait to get my hands on some "Back in the U.S.S.R.".

  • SamsaTSP

GH5. Even though I love Rock Band (more than I love Guitar Hero, at least), I'd rather have a high amount of variety rather than an over-hyped "musical journey" through a bunch of songs I honestly never cared to listen to.

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/donski29311 Donski

Well all you Beatles Backers – Is sheer quantity enough to sway your decision? Activision just announced that anyone who buys Guitar Hero 5 in September will be able to get a free copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen for free. F-R-E-E! Not only is it free, but, allegedly, you'll get it before the game hits retail shelves. Personally, I'm probably picking up both games; if I wasn't, this reduces my decision to nearly a coin flip. Well played Activision. Well played.

  • brody

    I want to choose gh5

  • Antonio

I love Rock band, but GH5 wins this round easily. You get GHVH, and songs from WT and SH will transfer. Beatles are a good band, but they won't transfer to RB, so I'm going to boycot it.

  • §autonic123?

im against rock band beatles because just thing of jimi hendrix on gh:wt so i thing gh5 is the greater good best gitar game ever its a cool game.:p
