Modern Warfare 2 Breaks Entertainment Industry Record

By | November 18, 2009 | Xbox 360 |

We all knew Modern Warfare 2 was going to be big, real big.  Activision announce today that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 set the record for biggest entertainment launch in history: a cool $550 million in the first five days of release. The previous record, $500 million was held by Rockstar’s GTA IV.

Millions of gamers are playing MW2 online

Some more Modern Warfare two numbers:

  • More than 11 million achievements were unlocked in Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
  • More than 2.2 million unique gamers payed Modern Warfare 2 on November 10th, also setting a new record.
  • More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours

In just five days, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest worldwide entertainment release in history.

The increased sales, despite the current recession, may have also been slightly affected (positively) by the most recent wave of banning modified Xbox 360 consoles from accessing Xbox Live.  Current reports estimate the number of consoles that were “banhammered” at up to a million consoles, although not even Microsoft is willing to confirm these numbers. With flashed DVD drive firmware, these consoles were able to play pirated games and since being banned, these consoles cannot connect to Xbox Live ever again.  While these bannings may have spurred on some more sales of legitimate copies of Activision’s newest hit game, no one can really be sure.

not to sound mean but I have no idea how the bannings can be attributed to more sales. Pirates will pirate no matter what, all this seemed to do is flood the preowned market with a bunch of screwed up 360's that I'm sure will get into the hands of unsuspecting parents and kids this christmas as people are just trying to save a dollar.

People who have their 360's banned go out and buy new 360's and in turn buy legitimate copies of games. The bannings brick the 360's, but as of right now they have no choice but to buy legit copies of Modern Warfare 2 because they can't use their modded ones anymore.

Actually, banning the 360's does not brick them. They are still functional as a console but can only be used offline. You cannot access Live or any Live-dependent functions, but you can still use the console offline and play pirated games on it.

These folks that have their consoles modded wouldn't necessarily have the funds to immediately go buy a new console & a new game, so I'm not sure it really & truly helped sales that much. Sure it probably sold a few more, but I would doubt the revenue generated from those sales specifically would be even close to $1 mil…

Now, if there were increased sales of 360's, that I'd understand.

That's true that they can still use them offline, but I doubt many people will do that Dj.

For example, let's say a guy gets his console banned. He then continues to play on his banned console offline with his normal account and gamesaves. Then the guy goes out and buys a new Xbox and uses the same hard drive. He finds out that he is screwed because his profile and ALL OF HIS GAMESAVES that he used on the banned console are now corrupt. So he recovers his profile and realizes that all achievements he unlocked on the banned console offline are also gone.

The banned console pretty much is the same as a bricked console because everything you do and achieve on that console becomes corrupt once it's moved to a normal console. So I doubt people even want to take the time to play a game on a banned console if their gamesave and profile will be unusable on another console. And to top it all off, they don't even keep their achievements.

The point I'm trying to make is that the banned consoles did lead to more sales of MW2 because the pirates (most of them have multiple consoles) are now forced to go out and buy a legit copy of the game and a legit console if needed. They could stick with play MW2 offline on their banned console, but it's pretty much pointless.
