Ubisoft Gets Revolutionary, Launches UPlay

By | November 18, 2009 | Xbox 360 |

Coinciding with the release of Assassin’s Creed II, Ubisoft launched their new progressive site, UPlay.  UPlay is a hub where gamers will be able to interact more deeply with the Ubisoft games they’re playing.  UPlay has four main components: UPlay Win, UPlay Help, UPlay Share, and UPlay Shop.  However, it’s UPlay Win that most gamers will find the most interesting.

UPlay Win rewards gamers for performing certain in game tasks by awarding them UPlay Win Units.  In this sense, it’s very much like the Achievements/Gamerscore system.  However, Ubisoft takes it one step further by letting gamers redeem their Win Units for actual prizes.  Some examples of prizes are themes, and in-game content such as character outfits and access to restricted areas.  It’s also worth noting that gamers can use the Win Units across different titles (i.e. If you earn points from Assassin’s Creed II, you can redeem them for titles such as the upcoming Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction). Additionally, UPlay works cross-platform, so, if you earn points on a PS3 title, they can be redeemed on a 360 title.

Assassin 10K and our friends at wouldyoukindly.com were nice enough to make this video demonstrating how UPlay Win works and the Assassin’s Creed II theme that you can redeem from there. From the looks of it, they suggest saving your points for something else.

Overall, we are very impressed by UPlay.  Even though it’s still in beta and not all aspects are functional, we think that the building blocks are in place for a very revolutionary service.  We can’t help but wonder – If UPlay is a success, will Ubisoft have changed what people expect out of their gaming experience?

I'm really impressed with Uplay. The Units are like spendable gamerscore. :D

So you can use it through the dashboard?

    • DjDATZ November 19, 2009

No, you need to have a Uplay enabled title and use it through the game's Uplay menu system.

Hmm, one concern I have is whether you'll be ale to earn enough points in each title to pick up extra game content for that title alone. I envision them setting prices on content such that you will have to play their other games to get enough points to get content you may want. Smart business move, but tough on gamers having to dole out exta cash and make hard choices.

Overall, could be a cool thing, we'll see how it pans out, though.

As of right now, each of the 3 titles has 1x 10, 1x 20, 1x 30 and 1x 40 Unit Rewards, which correspond directly to the 1x 10, 1x 20, 1x 30 and 1x 40 Unit Actions. Add to that, you get 10 units from accessing the service from each platform, so 10 from the PC, 10 from the 360 adnd 10 from the PS3, and you are NOT required to spend your Units on anything. If you don't want.

So in total, each game has 100 Units that you can earn and 100 Units that you can spend your money on.

For myself for AC2, I only purchased the 30 and 40 unit rewards, so I still have a total of 50 units left over to do with as I please.

That's good to hear, I'm happy to see they are matching the points needed for rewards with what you can earn. Very cool!

          Go Ubi! :D

How do you get the Uplay enabled title to use through the menu system…like the video above? I have earned three of them, but cannot find how to get to that menu as seen in the video.

    • DjDATZ November 26, 2009

Go to the main menu of Assassin's Creed II, that's the only title that currently supports Uplay, and press Y. If your Ubisoft account is already linked to your gamertag, you should be good to go! Let me know if you have any more questions.

The clearest answer I have heard yet! Thanks for the easy instructions. I just never paid attention to the lower right hand corner of the main menu.

No problem! Glad I could be of help! :D
