One of the givens of the gaming world is that good movies based on video games don’t happen. Why is this the case? Maybe it’s because people that know movies well don’t know video games well; maybe, its vice versa. Regardless, the product is usually something along the lines of Doom – that is to say, miserably bad.
The folks at Hollywood.com (self-proclaimed “film geeks and video gamers”) recently sat around and discussed the potential of current video game franchises and their adaptability to the silver screen. Their conclusion? Mass Effect is the most plausible franchise, and it simply MUST be made into a movie.
Here’s their case for Mass Effect The Movie. It’s pretty interesting, so give it a read. We have to agree with them, but we’re also pretty amped for the Gears of War movie and think it also has a ton of potential.

New Post, Would Mass Effect Make a Good Movie? – http://www.360Sync.com/2010/02/02/would-…
@360Sync Mass Effect would make a good movie, but it’s been a great game two times over, third times a charm!
I think it would make an awesome film series if it ISN'T based on the games. The games are too open ended with too many choices and it can't be transferred into films.
Mass Effect works because of the extra material. There are the books and now the films. I'd love to watch a film based on the first book for example. Or perhaps when humanity first discovered the Prothean leftovers on Mars. Or events that occur on the sidelines of the main Mass Effect story.
The universe created by BioWare is awesome and I would love for more people to experience it.
It seems very simliar to movies based on books. The people making the movie have a huge task of creating something everyone already knows and have put together in their own imaginations. Video Games take the imagination piece out, since it is visual, but it's still a story everyone knows.
As carocat said, they would need to base it on the universe, but take a different storyline. Just like with books that take days to read, how can you do a game justice by cramming 40+ hours of gameplay into a 2 hour movie? So much is lost.
