Microsoft Announces Partnership With Worldwide TV Content Providers For Xbox 360

Microsoft just announced via Major Nelson’s blog that they are partnering with over 40 television content providers around the world to provide content for Xbox 360 Gold subscribers. The content will begin rollout this holiday in over 20 countries worldwide, although it has not yet been announce in what context this content will be available.

The US partners include AT&T, HBO Go, Comcast, Bravo, Epix, Manga Entertainment, and many more. Other countries such as Mexico, Japan, and Canada will also have their own specific content available through partners such as the BBC in the UK, Rogers on Demand in Canada, Televisa in Mexico, and many more. You can see a breakdown of all the partners, both new and old, at the bottom of the post.

It’s not exactly IPTV that we’ve been hearing rumors about for years, but it’s a great start. It’s good to see that content providers are finally seeing game consoles less as enemies and more as a new, useful way to get their content in front of our eyes. My assumption is that this will all be available like it is now, via Zune Marketplace, and at a price. But the inclusion of things like HBO Go and Epix makes me excited. We’ll provide you with more information on this partnership as it becomes available.

Netflix, last.fm, and Other Issues Currently on Xbox LIVE

Just a heads up, according Â toÂ Xbox Support, many users are experiencing trouble watching Netflix, last.fm, and other services on Xbox LIVE.

Users may experience difficulties with the following services:

Browsing or playing movies from the Netflix Instant Queue

last.fm users will be unable to play Your Library Radio content.

AppHub users creating a new account and choose an existing publisher name are not receiving a friendly message. Current work around is to choose a new name and try again.

We aren’t sure how widespread the outage is, but will be sure to update when it is resolved.

Hopefully this will be resolved soon, but is currently also affecting other devices, including the PlayStation 3.

2010: The Year Xbox Made History

Microsoft took some time during their CES keynote to dish out some facts and figures on how their gaming division has fared this past year, and even more importantly just how their foray into the field of motion controllers has affected the industry. Apparently, Microsoft forcasted that they would sell about 5 million Kinect sensors by the end of this holiday season, but in fact managed to peddle 8 million world-wide. Not too shabby for such a new piece of technology. Not only that, but the Xbox 360 console itself has seen some good times, with more than 50 million consoles being sold thus far.

Interesting Fact: that is actually double the amount of original Xbox consoles sold during the last generation’s lifetime.

Another cool bit of trivia was the announcement that Xbox LIVE now supports 30 million active LIVE users, with an estimated new member joining the service every two seconds! Am I the only one who finds that concept insane?!

Chief executive Steve Ballmer also took a moment to make some announcements concerning what lies ahead for the Xbox360 console and Kinect. Here’s a look at some of the highlights:

ESPN on Xbox LIVE: showcasing more of this much touted partnership, Microsoft claims that users will be able to watch over 3500 live and on-demandÂ sporting events from ESPN3.com while viewing highlights from ESPN.com.
Avatar Kinect: Available this Spring, users will be able to control your Avatar’s movements and facial expressions via the Kinect. What this translates into exactly in terms of gameplay elements is still a mystery to me, but Gold Members can look forward to obtaining this add-on for free once it arrives.
Netlfix and Hulu-Plus: A fun bit of info for movie and television watchers out there was a demonstration of Kinect enhanced Netlfix and Hulu.Â This is sure to be a big hit with Kinect owners, seeing as how the libraries of these applications are just begging to be “waved” through.

Netflix Says 1080P Not In The Works

Earlier today, we got a tip that Netflix would be getting 1080P Instant Stream to the Xbox 360 sometime this year. Yet, another story seemed to say that Netflix was instead misquoted, and instead would be developing it for next year – 2011.

We decided to check in with Steve Swasey over at Netflix, who has this to say,

1080p is not coming to Netflix and is not in Netflix development plans.

While it seems unlikely that they aren’t developing it, that is the official word thus far from Netflix.

Columbia Movies Back On Instant Watch

It appears that, as of tonight, all the movies that disappeared from the Netflix Instant Watch list on “NXE Eve” have returned to your queues.Â What we eventually found out to be a license problem and not a plan of Sony’s to mess with 360 owners, has been taken care of and we can all enjoy the movies from Columbia Pictures through Netflix on the 360.Â Now if we can just get them to add some more current TV shows and movies we’d all be set.

Like with other movies and shows we don’t know how long they will be available but they all look to be around for a while. We’ve e-mailed Netflix to see if we can get any more info on this update.
